“Beginning to Pitch Perfect” was an interactive workshop for people at any stage of the entrepreneurial process. We had a guest speaker followed by small breakout rooms to get individualized feedback.
Featured Presenter: Dr. Erin Powell, Poole College of Management
E. Erin Powell is an assistant professor in the Department of Management, Innovation & Entrepreneurship at North Carolina State University. Prior to rejoining N.C. State, where she completed her Ph.D., she was a visiting assistant professor at Brown University and an assistant professor at Clemson University. She has taught a variety of entrepreneurship courses to undergraduate, MBA and Ph.D. students as well as to local entrepreneurs in rural communities. Erin’s research focuses on founder identity, heterogeneity of motivations among entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial resourcefulness. Her work has been published in leading academic journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management Studies and Small Business Economics. She serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Business Venturing.

Dr. Kathryn Brown, Arts Entrepreneurship
Kathryn Brown is Lecturer in Entrepreneurial Studies in the Arts, teaching courses in arts marketing, arts venture planning, and introductory courses for students interested in exploring arts entrepreneurship as a potential career path. Prof. Brown is the faculty adviser for the EMA Club (Entrepreneurs Marketing the Arts).
Prior to joining the NC State Faculty (2015), Professor Brown worked with Charlotte’s artist-entrepreneurs across disciplines at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC where she designed and taught arts entrepreneurship courses for the CPCC Small Business Center. 2011-2012, she taught entrepreneurship courses for musicians at the University of South Carolina as a graduate teaching assistant in the USC School of Music. She is an active member of the Society for Arts Entrepreneurship Education where she has presented panel discussions on various topics of concern for the developing field and currently serves on the editorial board for the society’s peer-reviewed publication, The Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education. Dr. Brown received her Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in clarinet performance at the University of South Carolina; she holds a Master of Music from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Music from East Carolina University. Professor Brown has over fifteen years of entrepreneurial experience as a freelance musician and private music teacher, performing with numerous professional orchestras across the southeast and teaching clarinet and piano lessons to young children, teens, and adults.
Lisa Chang, Poole College of Management
Lisa Chang is the Director of the Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Program at NC State and is an active supporter of the local entrepreneurial community. She has over 15 years of experience in technology commercialization analysis, over 20 years in project management, and has been employed by numerous startups in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. She provides global consulting services in technology commercialization for startups and Fortune 500 companies. At NC State, she is responsible for the graduate curriculum in entrepreneurship for the Jenkins MBA Program within the Poole College of Management, guiding MBA and STEM graduate students, faculty, and professionals with entrepreneurial aspirations through an experiential technology evaluation and commercialization program that creates startups using real intellectual property. Recent successes include local companies such as Tethis and Locus Biosciences. In this capacity, she serves as the liaison between Poole College and the Office of Research Commercialization at NC State, as well as comparable offices at other universities, government agencies, and private owners of intellectual property. She serves on the University’s Intellectual Property Committee, is an executive-in-residence for ORC, and contributes toward campus-wide technology entrepreneurship initiatives including NSF I-Corps, the Entrepreneurship Clinic, the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund, Wolfpack Investor Network due diligence, and Lulu E-games.
Dr. Jennifer Stanigar, Office of Faculty Development
Dr. Jennifer Stanigar is the Program Evaluation Specialist in NC State’s Office of Faculty Development where she applies her evaluation expertise and creativity to demonstrate the impact of faculty development efforts across the university. Her current research explores effective ways of presenting evaluation findings through data visualization and infographics to tell the stories within the data and compel project stakeholders to action.
